School Visit FAQ

Do you do school visits?

Yes, I do! I would love to come visit your school and give a talk as an author and illustrator. I have illustrated a dozen picture books and authored four of those. Which book would you like me to come and speak about?

My picture books seem to connect best with 2nd-5th graders, but I have also enjoyed speaking to middle school students about being an artist!

What do your school visits look like?

I typically do ~45 minute presentations that consist of a book reading, process talk, drawing exercise(s), and Q&A.
These presentations require a projector that I can connect my laptop to as well as an easel with paper and pens. No audio or lectern needed!

The most successful Q&As I’ve experienced are when the students have read the book and prepared questions in advance (with the help of their teacher or librarian). Sometimes the students even come with a printout of questions in hand, and I can attest that they appear more empowered and confident in asking their questions!

What does it cost to bring you in?

Usually I charge an honorarium as well as travel/lodging fees if needed. I am based out of the Seattle area and the timing of the visit and the distance I can travel varies from day to day. Please describe your ideal school visit to me in the form below and we’ll discuss!

Sometimes around the publication of a new book I will offer to visit schools for a minimum book buy in lieu of an honorarium.
